UNEP Chair: Alissa Nelson Assistant Chair: Luke Sturgeon |
Before you get into the background materials for the committee, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Alissa Nelson and I am currently a senior here at South Kingstown High School. I have participated in the SK Model UN as a delegate since my freshman year. Last year I was the assistant chair of the Junior High committee. So far this year I attended model UN's at St. John's High School as Israel, and Brown University as Sweden on the Security Council. In addition, I've been representing Israel and Burundi during school in my International Relations class. These experiences have given me a great idea of what Model UN participation has to offer, so I definitely have high expectations for a heated debate. Oddly enough, I do have a life outside of UN activities. I run SK's radio station (motto: "the best radio station in the school") where I play mostly ska and punk with some rockabilly and swing thrown in for good measure. I also write for the school newspaper and am a member of our Academic Decathlon team. On the side I play the flute and run my own fanzine. When I'm not doing all of that I'm usually sleeping. As for college plans, exact location has yet to be determined (I'm thinking of getting a shirt printed up with the names of the schools I applied to on it), but I'll probably be majoring in neuroscience or biochemistry. However, there's still plenty of time for me to change my mind on that.
Your assistant chair for the day will be Luke Sturgeon. Luke has attended St. John's Model UN and has been representing Indonesia during the year so he has a background knowledge of Southeast Asian policy. Also helping with background materials are Elizabeth Holbrook and Myra Meyerovich. Thanks to their research you should have a clear view of the issue at hand. Water scarcity is a problem which relates to every other committee in the SKMUN. We cannot solve the problems of terrorism and starvation without looking at underlying sources for international strife such as water sovereignty (simply look at the Arab-Israeli conflict for example). With this in mind, I encourage you to do your research, as your country may have a surprising and unique angle on the topic. If you have any difficulties in developing your country's stand, don't hesitate to contact Luke or myself and we will do all we can to help you out. I look forward to seeing you in committee!
